Uneventful Weekend

G and I enjoyed a relaxing weekend at home last week…we went to Ikea to buy a second chair for our living room (with our landlord’s money…YAY!), had a nice and long dinner with friends Saturday and then I ‘tried’ to entertain myself while G worked to fix bugs for work all day Sunday (ick!). We did make it to the Hill very late Sunday for a little frisbie. Now, I’m back to working on my project and G’s back to work.

Things are still looking good on the job search, I’ve interviewed (in person) with two recruitment firms and have had informal phone chats and e-mail exchanges with another 2-3. They seem hesitantly optimistic that I’ll be placed within a month once I place my canoe ‘soundly’ in the water. Fingers crossed that I’ll find a great opportunity within a fun and reputable agency. Actually, come to think of it, fingers, toes and all else crossed is more like it.

This weekend, we’re off to Stockholm. This will be our first venture to Scandinavia. We’ll keep you posted here.

Toe in the Job Search Waters…

Having allocated Mondays to the job search, I made a very passive attempt at answering ads with my resume last week. Then, having received no response (last week) and panicking a bit, yesterday I put the search on the front burner and ACTUALLY wrote a cover letter. I then submitted the letter along with my resume to recruiters and agencies in London. And I’ve been fielding follow-up calls and interview requests all day. Things are looking up. And, for the record, I’m happy that I didn’t start looking sooner. The recruiters are now only slightly put-off that I’ll begin in October/November rather than immediately. I can’t imagine starting the process in January…or earlier. Ick!
Could use a few prayers and positive thoughts tomorrow as my interviews begin…

Cheap Eats in London

Our loyal readers will be aware of my general opinions regarding English food. So, I suppose there’s no reason to repeat those opinions here. Instead, I’ve created this page to showcase some of the BEST low-cost eateries that we’ve discovered here, in London:

Ice Cream: Chin Chin Labs in Camden Town. Marine Ices, Chalk Farm.

Fresh & Fruity Cocktails: Cottons in Chalk Farm.

Mussels and Fries: Belgo Centrale (One location near Leicester Square. Another in Camden Town)

Sushi: Bento Cafe in Camden. Kyoto in Soho.

Japanese Rice Bowls: Tokyo Diner, Soho.

Cakes and Desserts: Chewie’s for Cupcakes. Louis Hungarian Bakeshop in Hampstead. Patisserie Valerie.

Burgers: Hache in Camden (try the one with goat cheese and roasted red pepper)

Pubs: The Engineer (Primrose Hill), The Washington on England’s Lane (Belsize Park), The Garden Gate (Hampstead Heath), The Steele’s (Haverstock Hill between Chalk Farm and Belsize Park) and The Hill (A Gastropub on Haverstock Hill between Chalk Farm and Belsize Park).

Birthday in Brugge

13683

G planned a wonderful birthday weekend in Brugge. We left town early Friday morning and took the Eurostar (the train that goes beneath the English Channel) and arrived just after noon. We wandered about the old streets lined with Dutch-style step homes and sampled their local gastro delights (Belgian Beer, waffles, mussels & fries & lots of chocolate).

13753

We also took a boat tour on the town’s canals, saw Michaelangelo’s Madonna and Child (originally intended for the duomo in Sienna…interesting…), toured a Belgian Brewery, stayed in the lofty A-frame “attic” room of a Dutch step house, rode bicycles about town all day Saturday, witnessed the hand-making of personalized hard candies (ie they chance the colors on the outside and can also include words and letters in the center and generally just had a great, low-key weekend.

13703

For anyone planning a trip to Brugge, our favorite Chocolate shop was The Chocolate Line. They have these marshmallow/smore chocolates that melt in your mouth–amazing. And, of course, they also have more mainstream chocolates that are quite good as well.

13748

If you continue to walk beyond Chocolate Line toward The Church of Our Lady (or some derivative thereof–home of Michaelangelo’s sculpture), you’ll pass “Zucher”, the candy shop mentioned above. They have glass windows so that you can see the process and they offer samples inside.A fun town and a fun birthday. Great job G!

Kew Gardens and PRET!

13585

I’ve posted a lot this week, but we had great weather again today and were able to venture out to another hot spot: Kew Gardens. The photo to the right is of the Palm House (a glass conservatory built somewhere between 1800 and 1900). G took some great botantical shots while we were out and we found a friendly peacock. Also. For those who have visited London and like to cook (NANCY!), I now have a Pret-a-Manger cookbook. If you have a favorite from Pret, let me know and I’ll see if the recipe’s in the book. Our (or should I say MY) favorites like carrot cake, love bars, chocolate brownies and the new jalapeno hot wrap are in the book…

4th of July

13527

Some have written to see what we were up to for the 4th…I invited my classmates for a picnic on Primrose Hill to celebrate the holiday. We all brought something (American Potluck Style) and we had all the usual suspects: Hot dogs, potato salad (LOTS of it), coleslaw, watermelon, apple pie, fruit, chips, etc. And we also had falafel, hummus and tons of pitas (thanks to my friend Shaun). Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate and it was overcast, grey and cold, but we carried on despite the light showers.

13533

Then, when the meal was done, we moved on to the Washington (a pub in downtown Belsize) to carry-on our fesitivities indoors. In total, around 25 attended…while a majority were from the US, we also celebrated with a Spaniard, a Frenchman, a Portugese, a Russian, a few British, a Mexican, someone from the Netherlands, an Italian, an Indian and others. Appropriately, this was the most “globally-inclusive” American Independence Day we’ve celebrated.Today, G and I went out to see the Tour de France time trials downtown. Very cool…very fast. Though their helmets become more wedge-shapped with every passing year…

13553

And after the time trials, we ventured to Primrose Hill to bask in the sunshine (thank goodness we’ve seen the sun at last) and to Camden Town for tapas at Jamon Jamon, a sushi dinner at Bento Cafe (the best sushi place we’ve found so far…yum!) and dessert at Marine Ices (homemade ice cream). Then, we walked back up the hill to our flat…hopefully we burned off some of the calories 🙂
