Star Gazing

In the Neightborhood

Perhaps I have been living under a rock, but apparently there is a popular celebrity named Gwenyth Paltrow. Apparently she also lives on our street. Well, that is according to a number of our friends who keep telling us this.

I am generally not up on the “news” like K is, but was still intrigued with the idea. So, we did a bit of research and while we couldn’t find an address, we did find a picture of Ms. Paltrow’s home which is well documented as in Belsize Park. With a simple stroll down the street this weekend, we could compare and determine which house is hers.

Unfortunately, we quickly realized that the style of homes on our street didn’t quite match that in the picture. Alas, we don’t live next to Gwenyth Paltrow after all.

On the Town

It turns out that movie premiers in the UK are often at Leicester Square just two blocks away from my office. K was showing me pictures of Brad and Angelina on the square just a couple weeks ago for the Beowulf premier. For almost a year, I have been working almost next door to celebrities walking down the red carpet and haven’t noticed. So, tonight I decided to crawl out from under my rock and go take a peek.

I wandered over toward Leicester Square where I heard crowds screaming “Nicole! Nicole!” and then a brief pause followed by more screams. As I approached the back of the crowd, I stretched to see above the heads and outstretched cameras in front of me. I got a glimpse of a red coat and blond hair.

The series of screams and pauses repeated as I continued to work my way along the back of the crowd hoping for a better view. Finally I found a break — there across the way was Nicole Kidman. She finished signing a few autographs and returned toward the center of the red carpet. The screams from fans on all sides peaked again calling for Nicole to head their way.

Standing three people deep on the opposite side, I was totally unprepared. I had no camera and nothing to sign; I just stood and watched, basking in the novelty of seeing a movie star in person. Just then she turned and headed my way. She reached the fence just five feet in front of me and stopped to greet the fans signing autographs.

I would have to say, not bad for a first movie premier. However, next time, I will be sure to bring a camera so I can post pictures for you.

For this evening, that is enough of the stars — I am now off to the Apollo for a little moon gazing.

Next up, Krakow…

With the new job, we were low-key in November…allowing me time to adjust and relax. But, it’s cold outside and we are now in need of a new scene. AND I have 2 additional days’ leave that MUST be used by year end. SO. We’ve booked an extended weekend in Krakow, Poland (the new Prague, so we hear).

We’ll leave on the 8th and head back on the 11th. It’s a beautiful old town with gorgeous architecture, a Christmas market and lots of cafes and galleries. A perfect winter retreat. Auschwitz is nearby…but for selfish reasons, I can’t be sure if we’ll visit. We visited Dachau outside Munich last winter and, of course, the Hiroshima memorial in Japan in ’06…it’s good to go, learn and remember–but mentally and emotionally exhausting. Hmmm…

English-Style Thanksgiving

15285

After a bit of an episode trying to find a turkey in London last year, we decided to embrace an English Thanksgiving in 2007…A night with friends at the Mayflower Pub in Rotherhithe (a borough by the Thames in London).

15296

There’s a reason it’s called the Mayflower…the ship set sail from a dock once located around the corner from the pub. Nothing like a bit of nostalgia to put things in perspective.

I Passed!

It’s official. The marks are in. I passed…though an inch from distinction (honors) in the end–literally an inch, but it is nice to know and to be DONE! The pomp and circumstance will come at graduation in March.

Cass Alumni Ball

15356

Last night, G & I joined my classmates and a few hundred other Cass Alumni for a Ball at the Natural History Museum here, in London. I thought that dinner ON the Great Wall of China would be hard to top, but this event was a very close second.

The space was absolutely breathtaking, yet hard to describe and photograph. Our ball was held in the Great Hall. I’ll let the photos attempt do the job…

Will They iPhone?

As K mentioned, my phone dilemma at work is a bit different from hers.

I have been thinking about getting an iPhone for several months. I considered buying one in the States a couple weeks ago, but the UK launch was right around the corner — so I waited. K has been encouraging me to get it despite the fact it is a bit of a luxury. My last couple phones have been very basic/cheap, so it would be a welcome upgrade.

I had talked myself into it and was finally planning to buy one this weekend. I mentioned it at work last week when I learned that my company may be buying everyone phones. And not just phones, but iPhones (our CEO really wants an iPhone too). We are in the midst of finalizing our second round of funding, so we have to wait until that is completed first (and make sure the investors are in agreement). We are a mobile services company, so it is justified, but it could be a month before we know. And, it may not happen.

So, we visited the Apple store this weekend and I drooled instead of purchased. Can I wait another month for a company iPhone? I’ll do my best.

Lord Mayor’s Show

15186

Today was fun! We went into the City to see the Lord Mayor’s Day Parade (a procession taking him to get the Queen’s blessing to carry-on), went out for a nice Italian meal and headed down to the Thames to see fireworks to celebrate the day. Ahhh…we LOVE London. Fireworks are my FAVORITE. And this week has been full of them…Guy Fawkes weekend last week (3 nights of Fireworks!) and now Dwali (Indian Holiday celebrated with Fireworks) and Lord Mayor’s…it’s dreamy!

15202

Then, we capped the day by going to visit G’s iPhone at the Apple Store. That’s an entirely different story that I’ll allow G to post. But we did end up leaving with nice speakers for our flat. Now, we’re not limited to the low sound that the MacBook can achieve independently. YAY! Neighbors be warned 🙂

15212

This weekend is also Remembrance Day…the UK equivalent to Veteran’s Day…they honor those who have served (and or died in service) with poppies, crosses and ceremonies.

See additional photos from the day.
